We all know that Black Excellence isn’t a “fad”. It’s not something you “do”, it’s literally a part of who we are. Growing up knowing that you have to work twice as hard to get half as far, was never used as a term of endearment. It is a guideline to success.
I am so proud and honored to be a part of the generation breaking barriers and folding stereotypes. I am blessed with the opportunity to be a part of a class that not only is a force to be reckoned with but where we are forcing others to acknowledge our presence.
As one of the prominent leaders in the automotive industry, Chevrolet has been breaking ground and building opportunities for years. Recently, I had a front row seat to witness not only an example of the opportunities they provide, but I was witness to a life changing moment for six HBCU students.
These students were selected as DTU fellows, and each received a $10,000 scholarship and a $5,000 stipend. During this journey, the fellows traveled in the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Blazer as part of their reporting assignments. Travelling from coast to coast, these brilliant students were tested and tried, true and through.
Everything from team building to work ethic and still juggling everyday life challenges, these 6 students emerged with a renewed sense of life and outlook on the world. Listening to their stories of combating the stereotypes of media and journalism allowed me a perspective that was all too familiar.
Recently, the HBCU Graduates traveled to General Motors World Headquarters in Detroit for culmination of the program. I can’t think of a more fitting location. Known for its resilience and the ability to adapt to any circumstance, Detroit embodies the program and exudes excellence in a reflection of these 6 deserving journalist.
During this ceremony, the recipients received their $10,000 scholarships and certificates of completion. DTU Advisor Fonzworth Bentley (Morehouse College); DTU Ambassador; DJ Envy (Hampton University); and publishers from the NNPA were also in attendance during this celebratory event.
Professional and friendly, the journalist had the chance to speak on their experiences from the duration of the program. Honest and bearing their soul, the HBCU graduates spoke candidly of their personal reflection and thanking Chevrolet for the opportunity to experience the world through a writer’s eyes.
Not only did I leave motivated and inspired, I left with an eye-opening revelation of the impact that these journalist will have on the community. Not only are they graced with a powerful platform, they were handpicked to show that not only are phenomenal in presence, but also in our platforms.
I am looking forward to following these journalist as they continue to grow and prosper in their respective fields. I can not wait to see the impact they will continue to have on their community!
